India and Indonesia have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations with a series of agreements spanning defence, maritime security, critical minerals, technology, digital connectivity, and resilient supply chains.

The announcement came after high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta during the first leg of the Prime Minister’s three-nation Indo-Pacific tour.

As part of the landmark defence cooperation, Indonesia has approved the procurement of India’s indigenously developed BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and the Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. The acquisitions are expected to deepen military cooperation between the two maritime neighbours while strengthening Indonesia’s defence capabilities.

With this agreement, Indonesia becomes the second country after the Philippines to procure the BrahMos missile system, representing another significant achievement for India’s growing defence exports. The deal is also expected to provide a major boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing sector and reinforce its ambition of becoming a leading global exporter of advanced military equipment.

Beyond defence, both countries unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at enhancing cooperation across several strategic sectors. The framework focuses on maritime security, critical mineral partnerships, advanced technologies, digital infrastructure, and supply chain resilience, reflecting the shared commitment to maintaining stability and economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Addressing the media after the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Modi said the comprehensive strategic partnership established in 2018 has now entered a new phase of growth. He noted that both nations are making substantial progress across development, security, technology, culture, and education, expressing confidence that the latest agreements would open a new chapter in India-Indonesia relations.

The agreements are being viewed as a strategic step towards strengthening regional security cooperation while expanding India’s footprint as a reliable defence manufacturing and export partner in the Indo-Pacific.
