Pune Ghat Region Under Red Alert as IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rain Across Maharashtra
The India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for Pune’s ghat region and Orange Alerts across several districts, while rising dam levels in Nashik and continued rainfall elsewhere keep authorities on high alert.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the ghat regions of Pune district, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours as multiple weather systems remain active across central and western India. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in vulnerable and landslide-prone areas.
According to meteorologists, changes in atmospheric conditions have led to the formation of a low-pressure trough extending from Rohtak through Sidhi and Ranchi to the northwestern Bay of Bengal at an altitude of around 1.5 kilometres. Another active trough stretches from the Arabian Sea across South Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. These weather systems are expected to intensify rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra.
Apart from Pune’s ghat section, the IMD has issued Orange Alerts for Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Nashik, the ghat areas of Satara and Kolhapur, indicating the likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Mumbai, Ratnagiri and the Vidarbha region remain under a Yellow Alert due to forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.
Continuous rainfall has also led to a significant rise in water storage across Nashik district. As a precautionary measure, authorities have released water from several reservoirs. The Kadwa Dam is currently discharging 374 cusecs of water, while Bhavali Dam is releasing 1,218 cusecs and Palkhed Dam 1,392 cusecs. Residents living along riverbanks have been advised to remain alert as inflows into these reservoirs continue due to persistent rainfall in the catchment areas.
In contrast, the steady rainfall has brought welcome relief to farmers in Jalna district, where overnight showers have improved soil moisture and provided a much-needed boost to Kharif crops. Agricultural experts believe the rainfall will support crop growth if favourable weather conditions continue in the coming days.
The state administration has appealed to citizens to closely follow official weather advisories, avoid flood-prone locations, and cooperate with local authorities until the weather situation improves.
