Rahul Gandhi accused the government of restricting parliamentary discussions on student issues, demanded Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, and criticised the handling of protests, while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned against politically motivated demonstrations.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Union government, alleging that even discussions in Parliament on issues concerning students require the Centre’s approval. Speaking during a protest in New Delhi, Gandhi claimed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla indicated that permission from the government was necessary before a debate on student-related matters could take place in the House.
According to Gandhi, the Opposition had requested a discussion on the concerns raised by protesting students, but was informed that the matter would first require consultation with the government. He alleged that such a position undermines the role of Parliament and raises serious questions about democratic functioning.
Addressing the gathering, Gandhi said India’s youth are facing shrinking employment and business opportunities, making competitive examinations the last major pathway for securing a future. However, he alleged that repeated irregularities in the examination system have weakened even this avenue, leaving students frustrated and uncertain about their prospects.
The Congress leader further accused the government of allowing the country’s education system to be influenced by ideological interests and claimed that its policies primarily benefit large industrialists while young people continue to struggle for jobs and opportunities. He asserted that the ongoing student protests reflect broader concerns about the lack of confidence among the youth regarding their future.
Gandhi also reiterated his demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, holding him accountable for the prevailing situation. He further alleged that the police action against protesting students falls under the responsibility of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cautioned that leaderless or “faceless” protests often attract vested interests seeking to pursue political agendas. While affirming that peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right, he warned that protests without permission, acts of violence, or attempts to create deliberate unrest would not be tolerated. He emphasised that constitutional rights must be exercised responsibly and within the framework of the law.
