Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike as PM Modi Announces Tougher Anti-Paper Leak Bill

Activist Sonam Wangchuk called off his 26-day fast after government assurances on NEET reforms, as PM Modi unveiled a stricter anti-paper leak bill with fast-track courts, set for Cabinet discussion Friday.

Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike late Thursday night at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon after receiving written assurances from the Central government. The breakthrough came following a meeting with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, alongside senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh. The government committed to discussing accountability in the country’s examination system in Parliament, assured compensation for families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide following the paper leak controversy, and pledged that no legal action would be taken against peacefully protesting students.

Wangchuk, who began his fast on June 28 in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) ongoing agitation, said around 65 Members of Parliament from across political parties had urged him to end the strike before the written commitment finally arrived. He emphasised his continued commitment to non-violence even as the broader protest continues. The CJP has clarified it will maintain its demonstration at Jantar Mantar until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.

Separately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Centre will introduce a stronger anti-paper leak law featuring fast-track courts and stricter punishment for offenders. In a video message released early Thursday, Modi said the Union Cabinet will review the draft legislation on Friday, with the Bill expected to be tabled in Parliament next week. The Prime Minister noted that authorities had already conducted examinations for 2.2 million candidates without further delay and made several arrests in connection with the leaks.

The developments mark a significant shift in the weeks-long standoff between the government and protesting students, even as opposition leaders continue to press for the Education Minister’s removal.
