Mumbai, April 12, 2025: In a move that promises to make bus travel safer for millions of commuters, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set for a major tech upgrade. Starting this year, every bright red ST bus plying Mumbai’s roads will be equipped with CCTV cameras, emergency panic buttons, and real-time GPS tracking—part of a sweeping modernization drive by the transport corporation.

Transport officials revealed the ambitious plan, which will see 12,400 buses fitted with surveillance systems in the first phase. A central control room will monitor live feeds from moving buses, while strategically placed panic buttons will allow passengers to silently alert authorities during emergencies.
But the Upgrades Don’t Stop There
MSRTC is going all out to transform the riding experience:
- 2,500 rickety old buses will be scrapped within two months
- 5,150 new electric buses have been ordered, with 280 already operating on city routes
- 800 new Lalpari buses joined the fleet this year
- Plush AC sleeper coaches are coming for overnight travellers
Station Revamps Underway
The MSRTC is also upgrading 66 major bus terminals across the state. These stations will be redeveloped through public-private partnerships, featuring:
- Better waiting lounges
- Cleaner, accessible toilets
- Enhanced security measures
For the thousands who depend on these buses daily—from office workers to students—these changes can’t come soon enough. As the city awaits the rollout of these upgrades, one thing is clear: the humble ST bus is stepping into the 21st century.
