Delay in action sparks outrage as activists question police over late FIR against MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, alleging pressure and demanding immediate accountability and protection for the complainant

Kolhapur, 25 April | 2026: Tension gripped Kolhapur after activists confronted police over the delay in registering a case against MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for allegedly threatening author Prashant Ambi. Despite 24 hours passing since the complaint, no FIR had initially been filed, prompting sharp questions from progressive groups about possible pressure on the police.

Activists gathered at Rajarampuri Police Station, demanding immediate action and accountability. Among those present was MLA Rohit Pawar, who raised concerns about the safety of the author and urged authorities to provide protection. He also called for strict action against those using abusive language and issuing threats.

As pressure mounted, police initiated the process, and a case was eventually registered late at night. However, the delay drew strong criticism, with activists alleging that Gaikwad himself had admitted to issuing threats, questioning why action was not taken sooner.

Police Inspector Satish Hodgar stated that action would be taken after receiving necessary reports and denied any intentional delay. However, activists accused the police of avoiding responsibility, especially after alleged derogatory remarks were made about historical figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Govind Pansare.

The situation intensified with strong reactions from political leaders and social activists, who demanded that serious charges, including those related to outraging modesty, be invoked. Questions were also raised about whether police were waiting for a more serious incident before acting.

Meanwhile, several progressive organisations have announced a protest march on April 28 towards Gaikwad’s residence in Buldhana. The protest will also include a collective reading of the book “Who Was Shivaji?” written by Govind Pansare, as a mark of resistance
