Paneer vs cheese analog: Will new rules expose what hotels really serve?
Paneer vs cheese analog comes into focus as Maharashtra mandates clear menu disclosure, aiming to stop consumer fraud and ensure transparency in what customers are actually eating
Mumbai, 25 April | 2026: In a move to curb food adulteration and protect consumers, the Maharashtra government has made it mandatory for hotels and restaurants to clearly mention the use of “cheese analog” if it is served instead of real paneer. The rule will be enforced across the state starting April 27.
Any establishment using cheese analog must now disclose it on menu cards, bills, or electronic display boards.

The initiative has also drawn attention from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which issued a circular on April 21 extending similar guidelines nationwide, indicating that Maharashtra’s approach could become a model for the rest of the country.

As per food safety norms, paneer is a dairy product made purely from milk, while cheese analog is produced using ingredients like edible oils, starch, emulsifiers, and other additives. Though it resembles paneer in appearance, it is significantly different in composition and quality.Authorities have warned of strict action against violators. Licenses of hotels found hiding such information could be permanently cancelled. The crackdown is expected to be fully implemented from May 1, 2026.

Consumers have been urged to report any violations through the toll-free helpline 1800-222-365, as the government intensifies efforts to ensure transparency and safeguard public health.
