New Delhi | May 15, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday embarked on a major five-nation diplomatic tour covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with a strong focus on energy security, trade expansion, technology partnerships and strategic cooperation.

The visit comes at a crucial time as India faces rising global oil prices and geopolitical instability linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Officials said Modi’s first stop in the UAE will primarily focus on strengthening energy cooperation and securing long-term crude oil and LNG supplies for India.

During his UAE visit, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Discussions are expected to cover energy security, regional stability, trade and welfare of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf nation. The UAE currently remains India’s third-largest trading partner and a major energy supplier.

Following the UAE leg, Modi will travel to the Netherlands, where semiconductor cooperation, innovation, green hydrogen and water management partnerships are expected to dominate discussions with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Analysts believe the Netherlands visit is particularly important for India’s semiconductor ambitions, especially with global chip equipment giant ASML based there.

In Sweden and Norway, Modi will participate in bilateral meetings and the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. The summit will focus on artificial intelligence, renewable energy, climate action, resilient supply chains, Arctic cooperation and advanced technologies.

The Norway visit is also historically significant as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in more than four decades. Modi is expected to hold talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit.

The final leg of the tour will take Modi to Italy, where he will meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella. The two countries are expected to discuss defence cooperation, clean energy, trade, innovation and implementation of the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029.

Government officials said the broader objective of the tour is to deepen India’s economic and strategic engagement with Europe and the Gulf region, especially after the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
