India is creating a specialised drone force with 50,000 trained personnel to strengthen surveillance, precision strikes and rapid battlefield response amid evolving global warfare challenges.

May 8, 2026 | New Delhi In a major transformation of its military strategy, India has decided to establish a dedicated drone force comprising nearly 50,000 trained soldiers to strengthen its future warfare capabilities. The move comes in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and the growing global reliance on unmanned systems in conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
According to officials from the Integrated Defence Headquarters, the specialised drone units will serve as the first line of response during military operations. The project aims to integrate advanced drone warfare into the Army, Air Force and other security agencies over the next three years.
As part of the initiative, 15 new Centres of Excellence will be established across the country to provide specialised drone combat training. These centres will use simulators and virtual reality systems to train personnel in reconnaissance, surveillance and precision strike missions. Authorities are also planning to integrate border security agencies such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) into the larger drone warfare network in the future.
Military experts say the new force will play a triple role intelligence gathering, surveillance and offensive operations. The drone systems will reportedly be linked with the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command network and the Army’s Akashteer air defence system to ensure coordinated battlefield operations.

Retired Air Commodore Gaurav M. Tripathi said future wars would increasingly become “multi-domain operations,” involving cyber warfare, electronic warfare and advanced autonomous systems. He warned that India may soon face hardened drones equipped with sophisticated navigation systems capable of operating without GPS and resistant to conventional jamming technologies.
In another ambitious step, the armed forces are planning to provide basic drone operation training to every soldier, with the long-term objective of equipping individual troops with personal battlefield drones. Officials also revealed plans to deploy nearly 8,000 drones in every Army corps, potentially creating a massive fleet of over one lakh drones across the military establishment.
