Senior BJP leader and former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma took oath as the Governor of Maharashtra, marking a significant constitutional transition in the state’s leadership.

Mumbai | 11 March, 2026:Jishnu Dev Varma was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra on Wednesday in a formal ceremony held at Raj Bhavan Mumbai. The oath of office was administered by Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, in the presence of senior political leaders, government officials and dignitaries.

Dev Varma, a senior leader associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura and has been an influential figure in the political landscape of the northeastern state for several decades. His appointment as the constitutional head of Maharashtra marks another major step in his long public service career.

The swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan was attended by several prominent leaders, including the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, cabinet ministers, legislators, and senior administrative officials. Representatives from various sectors, including the judiciary, civil services, and political parties, were also present at the event.

Speaking after taking the oath, Dev Varma expressed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and serving the people of Maharashtra with dedication and impartiality. He stated that he would work closely with the state government while ensuring that the constitutional responsibilities of the Governor’s office are carried out effectively.

The position of Governor holds an important constitutional role in India’s federal system. As the representative of the President of India in the state, the Governor performs a range of duties including overseeing the functioning of the state government, summoning and proroguing the state legislature, and ensuring that governance is carried out in accordance with the Constitution.

Dev Varma brings with him extensive administrative and political experience. During his tenure in Tripura’s government, he was associated with key policy decisions and development initiatives in sectors such as governance reforms, infrastructure development, and cultural preservation.

Political observers believe his experience in governance and party organization could help him effectively manage the responsibilities of the Governor’s office in Maharashtra, one of India’s most politically and economically significant states.

Maharashtra, with its capital in Mumbai, plays a crucial role in the country’s economy and politics. As Governor, Dev Varma will also be responsible for several ceremonial and administrative functions, including interactions with universities as Chancellor and facilitating constitutional processes when required.

The appointment and swearing-in of Dev Varma comes as part of the regular constitutional process through which governors are appointed by the President of India. Officials noted that the transition was conducted smoothly, maintaining the traditions and protocols associated with the office.

With the oath ceremony completed, Dev Varma has formally assumed charge as the Governor of Maharashtra and is expected to begin his official engagements and meetings with state authorities in the coming days.
