May 29, 2026 | Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah officially tendered his resignation on Thursday, submitting the formal document to Prabhu Shankar, the Special Secretary to the Governor, at Lok Bhavan. The submission was received by the secretariat due to the absence of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who was traveling to Indore. This administrative step effectively clears the path for Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar to assume the chief ministership, a transition awaiting final ratification by the Congress Legislature Party.

Prior to his resignation, Siddaramaiah hosted a breakfast meeting for his cabinet colleagues to communicate his decision, during which Shivakumar sought his blessings. Siddaramaiah clarified that the step was taken in accordance with directives from the party high command, affirming his intention to remain active in state politics rather than transitioning to the Rajya Sabha.

Following the announcement, the outgoing leader departed for New Delhi alongside his son, Yatindra, and Congress state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, though their flight was temporarily diverted to Jaipur due to inclement weather. The Delhi itinerary includes crucial deliberations regarding the new legislative leader, cabinet composition, and the selection of a new state party president to replace Shivakumar.

Addressing a press conference after submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah highlighted his administration’s three-year track record of public welfare initiatives, dismissing opposition allegations against his family as politically motivated fabrications. He emphasized his historic achievement of presenting seventeen state budgets, stoutly defending Karnataka’s fiscal health by noting an 8.1 percent growth rate and the state’s position as the country’s second-highest GST contributor, while alleging that the central government had withheld legitimate state funds. Maintaining that his departure was entirely free of external pressure, he expressed deep gratitude to the party leadership and attributed his journey to the constitutional frameworks established by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
