The National Medical Commission has extended the maximum duration allowed to complete the MBBS undergraduate medical degree from nine to ten years
May 29, 2026 | Mumbai: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a significant policy shift by proposing an extension to the time limit for completing the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) undergraduate program. Under the newly introduced guidelines, medical students will now be permitted a maximum duration of ten years to successfully finish their entire degree course, marking a one-year increase from the previously mandated nine-year threshold.

According to the official draft notification titled “Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2026,” issued by the apex medical regulator, the revised ten-year timeframe will strictly include the compulsory rotating medical internship. The NMC’s newly drafted regulatory framework intends to amend the statutory provisions originally laid down under Section 5 of the “Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023.” While the total course duration has been relaxed, the commission maintained strict academic boundaries regarding foundational training, clarifying that first-year MBBS students will still not be granted more than four attempts to clear their initial examinations.

Following the initial publication of this regulatory amendment, the NMC has formally invited comprehensive feedback, suggestions, and objections from all relevant stakeholders, including medical colleges, faculty members, student unions, and the general public.
Administrative officials confirmed that the feedback evaluation process will directly influence the final implementation of the revised rules. The regulatory body has stipulated that all official submissions must be sent exclusively via email to the designated address, ug_gmer_amend_2026@nmc.org.in, within the stipulated window, with the complete draft text made publicly accessible on the commission’s official portal.
