Maharashtra Waives Registration Fees on Ancestral Farmland Partition Deeds

Maharashtra Govt.
The Maharashtra government has waived registration charges on ancestral farmland partition deeds, extending the benefit to both tehsildar-level approvals and direct registrations at sub-registrar offices.

Mumbai | April 21, 2026:
In a significant relief to farmers and landholding families, the state revenue department has issued a fresh circular clarifying that no registration fee will be charged on partition deeds of ancestral agricultural land. The move applies not only to cases processed under Section 85 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, but also to those voluntarily registered by family members at sub-registrar offices.
Earlier, a government notification dated June 23, 2025, had provided fee exemption for partition deeds executed among family members under Section 85, where tehsildars are authorized to approve such divisions. However, in practice, many citizens were opting to directly register these agreements at sub-registrar offices instead of approaching tehsildars.

Due to the lack of explicit mention in the earlier notification, sub-registrar offices had continued to levy registration charges on such documents, leading to confusion and additional financial burden on farmers. The issue was flagged to the government, prompting the revenue department to step in with a clarificatory circular.
With this latest directive, the government has ensured uniform implementation of the fee waiver across both administrative channels, removing ambiguity and simplifying the process for citizens. The decision is expected to reduce procedural hurdles and encourage formal documentation of land partitions within families. Officials believe the move will particularly benefit rural households by lowering transaction costs and streamlining property-related processes, while also promoting transparency in land ownership records.
