US – Iran Agree to Resume Talks Amid Ceasefire Deadline Pressure

US
US and Iran have agreed to participate in a second round of high-stakes peace talks, raising cautious optimism just hours before the current ceasefire deadline is set to expire.

Washington/Islamabad | April 21, 2026:: After days of uncertainty and conflicting signals, both nations confirmed their willingness to engage in fresh negotiations aimed at de-escalating tensions. According to US officials, Vice President J.D. Vance is expected to travel from Washington to Islamabad to represent the American side. Iranian authorities have also confirmed their participation, with senior political and military figures, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, likely to attend if talks proceed as planned.
The renewed diplomatic push comes after a series of escalatory moves and sharp rhetoric from both sides. US President Donald Trump suggested that a “new and sensible leadership” in Iran could pave the way for a prosperous future, while Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged that continued conflict serves no one’s interests, though he expressed skepticism about the outcome of upcoming negotiations.

Tensions have been further aggravated by recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US seized an Iranian cargo vessel, prompting Tehran to label the action as “maritime piracy” and issue strong retaliatory warnings. The strategic waterway, through which nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supply passes, has become a focal point of the conflict.
The standoff has already impacted global markets, with crude oil prices rising by over six percent and increased volatility in international stock markets. European indices have also shown signs of instability amid fears of supply disruptions.
With only hours left before the ceasefire lapses, diplomatic efforts have intensified. Pakistan is reportedly preparing for the talks in Islamabad, with its military leadership also engaging in discussions with US officials over the implications of the naval blockade on negotiations.
