Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran) has intensified its crackdown on electricity theft and misuse in Pune, taking action against 1,552 consumers over a nine-month period. The enforcement drive, carried out between April 2025 and January 2026, has resulted in penalties exceeding ₹14 crore under various provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003.

According to officials, 507 consumers were found guilty of misusing electricity under Section 126 of the Act. These cases primarily involved residential connections being used for commercial or other unauthorized purposes. Authorities imposed fines amounting to ₹4.01 crore in such cases, highlighting the scale of misuse across the region. In addition, 1,045 cases of direct power theft were detected under Section 135. These involved illegal practices such as meter tampering and unauthorized connections to draw electricity. Penalties worth ₹1.29 crore were levied against offenders involved in these violations.

The action was carried out across multiple divisions within the Pune circle. In rural Pune, 451 theft cases were reported, while urban areas such as Rastapeth and Ganeshkhind also recorded significant violations. Separate action under misuse provisions further added to the enforcement numbers, indicating widespread irregularities in electricity consumption. Mahavitaran has urged consumers to use only authorized electricity connections and avoid illegal practices. Officials emphasized that power theft is a serious offense, attracting not only heavy financial penalties but also the possibility of imprisonment under the law.

The utility company has reiterated its commitment to curbing losses caused by electricity theft and ensuring fair usage among consumers. With stricter monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in place, authorities aim to deter violations and promote responsible energy consumption across the state.
