Pune | July 10, 2026:

Rescue teams continued intensive search operations at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) waste-to-energy plant in Moshi after a massive garbage heap collapsed onto an administrative building, killing one person and trapping several others beneath the debris. Authorities confirmed that 14 people have been rescued so far, while efforts remain underway to locate eight individuals still feared trapped.

The incident occurred when a large mound of legacy waste gave way and crashed into the three-storey administrative building located within the waste processing facility. The impact caused a major structural collapse, burying employees and staff members inside. Heavy rainfall over the past few days is suspected to have weakened the garbage mound, although officials are yet to confirm the exact cause of the disaster.

A multi-agency rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, PCMC Fire Brigade, PMRDA Fire Services and other emergency response teams has been underway round the clock. Excavators, cranes, sniffer dogs and specialised rescue equipment are being deployed to carefully remove debris while ensuring the safety of those believed to be trapped underneath.

Officials stated that the challenging conditions, including unstable debris and continuous rainfall, have slowed rescue efforts. Medical teams and ambulances remain stationed at the site as authorities coordinate the ongoing operation. Families of the missing workers are also being assisted by civic officials and emergency personnel.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns over the safety of waste management infrastructure and the handling of legacy garbage at large dumping sites. The incident has also reignited discussions on the need for decentralised solid waste management systems and stronger safety measures at municipal waste facilities. Authorities are expected to initiate a detailed investigation into the collapse once rescue operations are completed.
