Pune | April 25, 2026: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Wanowrie Police have arrested a 32-year-old accused

and seized a significant quantity of MD (Mephedrone) drugs along with an illegal firearm and live ammunition, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the city.

According to police officials, the accused-identified as Akram Aziz Shaikh, a resident of Gultekdi-was apprehended following a specific intelligence input. Authorities received information that he would be arriving in the Camp area, prompting a planned operation. A police team laid a trap and successfully detained him upon arrival.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused was already wanted in a narcotics-related case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Following his arrest, police conducted a search at his residence, leading to the recovery of approximately 920 grams of MD powder, valued at around ₹27.6 lakh.

In addition to the drugs, officers seized a country-made pistol, two magazines, and seven live cartridges, with the total value of the recovered items estimated at over ₹28 lakh. The presence of both narcotics and illegal weapons has raised concerns about possible links to organised crime networks operating in Pune.

Police sources indicated that the operation was carried out under the supervision of senior officers , including Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. A dedicated team from Wanowrie Police Station executed the investigation , which is being seen as a significant success in the city’s ongoing crackdown on drug peddling.

Investigators are now probing deeper to uncover the accused’s supply chain, distribution network, and potential connections to larger interstate drug syndicates. Officials believe that such seizures could help dismantle broader networks involved in the illegal drug trade.

This case adds to a growing list of narcotics-related arrests in Pune, where law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations in recent months. The increasing use of synthetic drugs like MD has been a major concern, particularly among urban youth, prompting stricter enforcement measures.

Experts note that the combination of drugs and illegal firearms is especially alarming, as it points to the potential for violence and organised criminal activity. Authorities are expected to invoke stringent provisions under the NDPS Act and Arms Act, which could lead to severe penalties if the accused is convicted.

Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict vigilance and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or illegal arms possession.
