Pune | May 02, 2026:
In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Pune has detained a woman assistant police inspector for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹28 lakh in connection with an ongoing inquiry. The accused officer, identified as Vaishali Totewar, was attached to the Economic Offences Wing of the Pune Police Commissionerate at the time of the incident. According to officials, the officer had recently been promoted to the rank of Police Inspector and transferred to the Mumbai Railway Police. She had been formally relieved from her duties in Pune and was set to assume her new role when the ACB initiated action based on a complaint.
The complaint alleged that the officer demanded ₹28 lakh to influence or manage the outcome of an inquiry assigned to her. Investigators revealed that a portion of the bribe amount had already been paid earlier, while the remaining amount was to be delivered through a private intermediary.
Acting on the complaint, the ACB set up a trap near a city hotel, where the intermediary was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount. Following the arrest of the intermediary, the officer was taken into custody for further questioning.

Officials confirmed that multiple ACB teams conducted simultaneous searches at the officer’s residence and office premises to gather additional evidence. At the time of the alleged offence, the officer was reportedly handling several complaint applications, raising concerns about possible misuse of authority.
The incident has sparked serious concerns within the police department, especially as the action came just before the officer was to take charge of a new and higher position. Authorities have stated that further investigation is underway, and more details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
