Pune Railway Station Faces Heavy Crowd as Jodhpur and Garib Rath Trains Add to Passenger Rush

Pune Railway Station faces heavy passenger congestion as Jodhpur and Garib Rath trains attract large crowds amid rising railway footfall.

Pune: Pune Railway Station witnessed heavy passenger congestion amid a rush of travellers boarding long-distance trains, highlighting the growing pressure on the city’s busiest railway terminal.

The crowd was particularly noticeable around platforms used for trains serving passengers travelling towards northern destinations, including the Jodhpur-bound service. Passenger movement and limited space on the platforms created difficulties for commuters trying to board and exit trains.

Rising Passenger Footfall Puts Pressure on Pune Station

Pune Railway Station handles a large volume of passengers every day, with the footfall increasing significantly during holiday and festive periods. Recent reports indicate that the station handles an average daily passenger footfall of around 1.72 lakh, which can cross 2 lakh during peak festive periods.

The increasing passenger volume has put pressure on existing platforms, foot-over bridges and other passenger facilities.

Hadapsar and Pune Stations Share the Rail Traffic Load

The railway authorities have been working to reduce congestion by expanding infrastructure at Pune station and improving operations at nearby stations such as Hadapsar.

The Hadapsar-Jodhpur Express has become an important service for passengers travelling between Pune and Rajasthan. The service operates from Hadapsar, helping distribute some long-distance passenger traffic away from Pune Junction.

Garib Rath Trains Also Attract Large Crowds

Garib Rath services, which offer relatively affordable air-conditioned travel, also attract substantial passenger demand. During periods of high travel volume, passengers can face significant crowding around platforms and access points.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by railway authorities in managing simultaneous train movements and large numbers of passengers.

Major Expansion Underway at Pune Railway Station

Indian Railways is undertaking a major expansion and yard remodelling project at Pune station. The plan includes six new full-length platforms, extension of existing platforms and improvements to railway infrastructure.

A new third line between Ghorpuri and Hadapsar is also aimed at improving train operations and reducing congestion on the Pune-Daund route.

A permanent passenger holding area is also being developed near the MSRTC bus stop outside Pune station to better manage crowds during peak travel periods.

Need for Better Crowd Management

The recurring congestion at Pune Railway Station underscores the need for better passenger management, particularly when multiple popular trains operate around the same time.

With passenger numbers continuing to rise and several infrastructure projects underway, railway authorities are expected to use the expanded facilities to improve passenger movement and reduce overcrowding at the station.
