Several Pune restaurants and eateries scale down operations due to commercial LPG supply disruptions affecting the food industry.

Pune, 10 March, 2026: Several restaurants, bakeries and small eateries across Pune have started partially shutting down or reducing kitchen operations due to a sudden shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. The disruption in the supply of 19-kg commercial gas cylinders, which are widely used by hotels and food businesses, has created serious challenges for the city’s hospitality sector. Many establishments are struggling to keep their kitchens running as available stock quickly runs out.

Restaurant owners say the supply problem has worsened over the past few days. A single commercial cylinder usually lasts only two to three days in a busy kitchen, and without regular deliveries, many eateries are unable to prepare food as usual. As a result, several restaurants have either reduced their operating hours, limited menu options or temporarily stopped cooking until new cylinders become available.

The situation has created uncertainty for Pune’s large food service industry, which includes thousands of restaurants, street food outlets, mess facilities and catering services. These businesses serve daily meals to students, office employees and residents across the city. If the shortage continues, industry representatives fear it could affect both customers and thousands of workers who depend on restaurant jobs for their livelihood.

Gas distributors in the city have reportedly faced delays in receiving fresh supplies of commercial cylinders. In several cases, distributors have been forced to rely only on existing inventory while waiting for new deliveries. This has left restaurant owners unsure about when they will be able to receive their next cylinder refill.

Industry insiders say the disruption has occurred because LPG distribution is currently being prioritised for household consumption. With domestic cooking gas supply given preference, commercial users such as restaurants, bakeries and hotels are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain cylinders needed for daily operations.

The problem is not limited to restaurants alone. Some gas-based crematorium facilities in the city have also temporarily stopped operations in order to conserve LPG supplies. Authorities have reportedly taken this step to ensure that household cooking gas remains available without interruption.

Experts say international factors may also be influencing the LPG supply chain. Global energy disruptions and geopolitical tensions in parts of West Asia have affected the availability and distribution of petroleum-based fuels, indirectly impacting commercial LPG supplies in several regions.

Despite the shortage affecting commercial users, officials have clarified that domestic LPG supply for households remains stable. Authorities have also urged residents not to panic and assured that steps are being taken to stabilise distribution.

For Pune’s restaurant industry, the coming days will be crucial. If regular LPG supply is not restored soon, more eateries may be forced to scale down operations or temporarily close their kitchens. Such disruptions could impact the city’s food ecosystem, which plays a vital role in serving daily meals to thousands of people and providing employment to a large workforce.
