Pune’s World Book Day 2026 celebrates “Literature in Action” with community-driven events across the city from April 19 to 26.

April 15, 2026 | Pune: Pune is set to transform into a vibrant literary hub once again as the fourth edition of World Book Day 2026 introduces a unique theme – “Literature in Action.” Unlike conventional book celebrations confined to auditoriums and libraries, this year’s event aims to take literature beyond pages and into real-life community spaces, making it more inclusive, interactive, and socially impactful. The week-long celebration, scheduled from April 19 to 26, will unfold across multiple locations in the city, bringing together readers, writers, artists, and communities under one shared vision.

Curated by Paalvia Foundation and Nukkad Café in collaboration with the Villoo Poonawalla Foundation, the festival is designed to showcase how literature can influence lives, inspire change, and foster deeper human connections. Organisers have deliberately moved away from traditional formats to create experiences that engage people directly with stories in real-world environments. The idea is simple yet powerful – literature should not just be read, but lived.

One of the defining aspects of this year’s celebration is its focus on social inclusion. Events will be hosted at diverse locations such as community libraries, orphanages, social organisations, and even public marketplaces. Spaces like Akshar Paaul’s Smiling Library, Balgram SOS Children’s Village, Purnkuti, and the historic Mahatma Phule Mandai will serve as key venues, turning everyday environments into storytelling platforms.

These locations are not chosen randomly. Each represents a different social context -from children of construction workers and underprivileged backgrounds to women, transgender communities, and individuals without parental care. By bringing literature into these spaces, the festival attempts to bridge social gaps and make creative expression accessible to all sections of society.

The event lineup reflects this philosophy through a wide range of activities. Initiatives like “Kahani Bazaar” will encourage participants to observe real-life scenes in Mandai and convert them into stories or art. Workshops such as “Sensory Expression” will challenge participants to experience writing beyond sight, guided by visually impaired facilitators. Poetry recitals like “She Spoke, The World Changed” will celebrate the voices of women reformers, while performances under “Words That Moved the World” will revisit historic speeches, songs, and poems that shaped India’s past.

Beyond performances and workshops, the festival also includes storytelling sessions, art therapy experiences, stargazing combined with literary imagination, and creative activities for children. These events are designed not only to entertain but also to encourage reflection, empathy, and community engagement.

The concept of World Book Day itself has global roots. First proposed by UNESCO in 1995, it is celebrated annually on April 23 to promote reading, publishing, and the importance of literature worldwide. Over the years, Pune has steadily built a strong literary culture, with events like book festivals and reading initiatives attracting large participation, especially among young readers.

In recent years, the city has also been positioning itself as a potential global literary destination, with increasing participation in book festivals and reading movements. Events like this not only strengthen that identity but also redefine how literature is experienced in an increasingly digital and fast-paced world.
