Political equations shift in Rahuri bypoll after Prajakta Tanpure withdraws; CM Devendra Fadnavis thanks him, boosting BJP candidate Akshay Kardile.

Rahuri, April 21, 2026: The Rahuri vidhansaba by-election has taken an unexpected turn after Prajakta Tanpure stepped back from the contest, a move that has significantly altered the political landscape in the constituency. While speculation around his possible entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has now subsided, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis publicly acknowledged Tanpure’s decision, sparking fresh political debate.

Addressing a public gathering, Fadnavis revealed that he had personally reached out to Tanpure, requesting him to reconsider contesting the bypoll following the demise of senior leader Shivajirao Kardile. According to the Chief Minister, Tanpure agreed to withdraw without delay, a gesture he described as reflective of “healthy political culture” in Maharashtra. This development has not only eased the path for BJP candidate Akshay Kardile but has also triggered speculation about potential political realignments in the near future.

The by-election was necessitated after the passing of Shivajirao Kardile, a veteran leader known for his grassroots connect and long-standing public service. His son, Akshay Kardile, is now in the fray, and Tanpure’s withdrawal is seen as a decisive factor that could tilt the balance in BJP’s favour.

During his campaign speech, Fadnavis strongly backed Akshay Kardile, making a series of development promises for the Rahuri constituency. In a striking remark, he said he was effectively handing over a “bearer cheque” from the state treasury, assuring that all pending demands of the region would be addressed. Key announcements included the revival of the Rahuri MIDC, allocation of nearly 1,000 acres of agricultural university land for industrial use, and implementation of a farm loan waiver before the upcoming Kharif season. He also reiterated commitments related to welfare schemes like free electricity for farmers and the Ladki Bahin scheme.

The Chief Minister also paid tribute to the late Shivajirao Kardile, calling him a “visionary politician” who dedicated his life to public service. He highlighted Kardile’s efforts in water projects such as Nilwande and Wambori canal systems, stating that voting in the by-election would be a tribute to his legacy.

Interestingly, despite stepping back from the electoral contest, Tanpure has not officially confirmed any political shift or alliance. His silence on joining BJP has kept political observers guessing, even as his withdrawal continues to dominate discussions in Rahuri more than the candidates themselves.

Analysts believe that Tanpure’s decision could indicate a softer political stance or strategic repositioning, especially in a constituency where alliances and local equations often play a decisive role. It also reflects how personal outreach and situational politics can influence electoral outcomes beyond party lines.

Prajakta Tanpure’s withdrawal has added a new dimension to the Rahuri bypoll, turning it from a straightforward contest into a politically nuanced development. As campaigning intensifies, all eyes remain on how this decision shapes voter sentiment and future political alignments in Maharashtra
