MNS chief Raj Thackeray has raised concerns over valuable land occupied by Marathi-medium schools, alleging growing interest in these plots and questioning the push toward CBSE schools
Pune | 30 April 2026: Raj Thackeray on Wednesday expressed concern over what he described as increasing interest in prime land occupied by Marathi-medium schools, suggesting that these spaces are being eyed for other purposes.
Speaking at an award function in Pune, Thackeray alleged that a broader trend of land monetisation is taking shape across the state. He said that plots located in key urban areas, including those belonging to Marathi schools, are attracting attention from multiple stakeholders, raising questions about future planning in the education sector. Referring to discussions around shutting down Marathi-medium institutions and introducing CBSE-pattern schools, he indicated that the issue goes beyond education policy and is linked to the value of land. According to him, decisions regarding such properties appear to be influenced by commercial interests rather than public need.

Thackeray also commented on changing attitudes toward land ownership, stating that earlier systems prioritised rightful ownership, but now there is a tendency to claim or utilise land based on opportunity. He pointed out that land under central, state, and municipal authorities has increasingly faced encroachments and unplanned development.
He further criticised what he described as a lack of accountability among decision-makers, saying there is limited sense of public ownership over city spaces. This, he claimed, has led to a rise in exploitative practices concerning land use.
During the event, he also spoke about the role of the media, urging journalists to work collectively to challenge the perception that public discourse has little impact on those in power. The remarks come amid ongoing debates over education models, urban land use, and the future of regional-language schools in Maharashtra.
