Kolkata | 30 April 2026:West Bengal witnessed a massive voter turnout in the second and final phase of assembly elections, with 91.66% polling recorded on Wednesday, according to the Election Commission of India.
With this, the combined turnout for both phases has reached an impressive 92.47%, following 93.19% voting in the first phase held on April 23. Voting in the second phase covered 142 constituencies across southern parts of the state.Polling began at 7 am and continued late into the evening, with voters still seen queuing up at several booths even after official closing time. Areas such as Bhabanipur, Basanti in South 24 Parganas, Chapra in Nadia, and Bally in Howrah reported long lines and high participation.
However, the voting process was not entirely smooth. Isolated incidents of violence, clashes, and technical glitches in electronic voting machines were reported from places including Bhabanipur, Nadia, and Bhangar, creating tension in certain pockets.

The election is largely being seen as a direct contest between the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party.Banerjee alleged that central security forces were being misused to influence the election process and claimed that polling was not conducted in a completely free and fair manner. She also visited multiple polling booths during the day.
Her opponent in Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari, dismissed the allegations, stating that such claims reflect nervousness over the election outcome.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, said that voters in West Bengal were able to exercise their franchise more freely this time due to strict arrangements, calling it a significant democratic moment. The results of the election are expected to be announced on Monday, with high political stakes and intense public interest surrounding the outcome.
