SPPU Grants One-Year Extension to Students With Expired Registration and PRN Validity
SPPU announces a one-year extension for students with expired registration or PRN validity, offering relief and fresh eligibility to complete degree requirements.
Pune | November10, 2025: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has offered major relief to thousands of students by approving a one-year extension for those whose course duration or Permanent Registration Number (PRN) validity has expired. Under the non-NEP system, students were required to complete their academic programmes within the “N + 2” timeframe, where N represents the standard duration of the course. With the new decision, this has now been extended to “N + 2 + 1”, giving students additional time to complete pending examinations, coursework and degree requirements that would otherwise have remained incomplete.
The university has begun the process of identifying eligible students through its internal academic database. The evaluation will consider various factors, including attendance records, academic progress, standing in the final year and internal assessments. Only students meeting the required criteria will be allowed to benefit from the extension. A separate examination schedule is expected to be released soon for these extended-term students, ensuring that their assessments do not clash with regular batches.
This extension comes as a lifeline for students who were unable to finish their programmes due to reasons such as academic backlog, financial difficulties, medical emergencies, personal issues or disruptions caused by the pandemic. Many students in recent years have faced serious barriers because their PRN validity expired, leaving them unable to fill exam forms, complete pending subjects or obtain final degrees. The new policy gives them an opportunity to resume and complete their academic journey instead of being forced to restart or abandon their education altogether.
SPPU has also emphasized that students should follow only official communication from their college principals or examination departments and avoid misinformation circulating through unofficial channels. Colleges have been instructed to coordinate with the university in updating student records and guiding eligible candidates through the revised process. The upcoming Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will outline exact rules, deadlines and documentation requirements.
The decision also aligns with the broader national shift toward a more flexible and student-friendly academic system. As higher education continues to evolve with the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP), universities are increasingly adopting policies that emphasise inclusivity and academic continuity. For students who struggled due to systemic challenges or personal setbacks, this extension represents both academic recovery and emotional reassurance.
To make the most of the new provision, students are advised to immediately consult their respective colleges, verify their eligibility, ensure that pending assignments or internal components are completed, and stay updated for the release of the extended-term exam timetable. Timely action will be key, as the one-year window is intended to help students complete their degrees efficiently without further delays.
