Pune | November10, 2025: A 57-year-old man who had been posing as a doctor for over 32 years has been arrested by Pune Police for running an illegal clinic in the Kasewadi area of Bhavani Peth. The accused had no medical degree, no recognised training and was not registered with any medical authority, yet continued to treat patients for more than three decades without detection. The case came to light after a formal complaint was lodged by the civic health department, prompting police to begin an investigation into the long-running illegal medical practice.

After the complaint was registered earlier this year, the accused attempted to avoid arrest by applying for anticipatory bail. His request was rejected in the lower court and again later in the higher court, after which he absconded. A dedicated police team was formed to trace him, and after several weeks of tracking, officers finally located him and took him into custody on November 6. He has since been remanded to police custody for further investigation.

According to investigators, the man had been treating residents in the locality for years, exploiting the lack of awareness and easy access to legitimate healthcare in densely populated neighbourhoods. His clinic operated in a narrow lane, drawing hundreds of patients over the decades who believed he was a trained, registered practitioner. Police are now examining patient records, treatment practices and the possibility of others assisting him in running the illegal establishment. Authorities are also assessing whether any patients suffered harm due to unqualified medical treatment.

The arrest has raised serious concerns about public health safety. Illegal practitioners operating without training can pose severe risks to patients, including misdiagnosis, inappropriate medication, delayed treatment for critical conditions and long-term health complications. Health officials have stressed the need for citizens to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a medical professional. They also urged residents, especially in vulnerable urban pockets, to report suspicious clinics or individuals offering medical services without proper documentation.

This case highlights a broader issue faced by many urban areas: the presence of unlicensed practitioners in communities with limited access to affordable healthcare. Such individuals often operate undetected for years due to trust built within local communities and the absence of routine checks. Following the arrest, authorities are expected to increase inspections of clinics across the city to identify similar illegal practices. Public awareness campaigns may also be expanded to educate residents about the risks associated with seeking treatment from unqualified individuals.
