79-Year-Old Resident of Pimple Saudagar Rescues Discarded Idols and Religious Photographs from Streets
A 79-year-old resident of Pimple Saudagar quietly collects broken idols and religious photos from streets and garbage dumps, preserving sacred items and serving his community.
Pune | November 13, 2025: At 79, a resident of Sai Vastu Society in Pimple Saudagar has quietly become an inspiring symbol of devotion and civic responsibility. During his daily morning walks, he began noticing broken idols and torn religious photographs lying on footpaths, near garbage bins and in overgrown corners of the neighbourhood. Disturbed by the sight of sacred items discarded so carelessly, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
What started as a moment of discomfort soon turned into a dedicated routine. Carrying a jute bag wherever he walks, he now collects every idol, photo or religious artefact he finds abandoned in public spaces. Instead of leaving them to be trampled or lost in waste, he takes them to a nearby temple, where they are either immersed respectfully or preserved safely. On the very first day of his initiative, he made multiple trips along the same route, gathering whatever he could find and ensuring nothing sacred remained neglected on the streets.
His neighbours began to notice his unwavering efforts. Soon, his housing society honoured him as their “unsung hero,” acknowledging that his work goes far beyond cleanliness — it preserves dignity, culture and spiritual sentiment. Residents say his actions have encouraged them to pay closer attention to how religious materials are handled and to treat such items with respect rather than indifference.
Beyond the spiritual responsibility, his mission addresses a larger civic concern. In fast-growing neighbourhoods like Pimple Saudagar, waste accumulation and careless disposal often lead to littered streets, blocked footpaths and degraded public spaces. By removing discarded idols and photos from these areas, he is not only honouring religious beliefs but also contributing to a cleaner and more orderly environment.
His initiative reminds people that community service does not always require grand campaigns or institutional support. Sometimes, all it takes is one person deciding to act with empathy, consistency and respect. His simple daily habit — a walk, a bag, and a willingness to stop and pick something up — has already created a noticeable difference and inspired many around him.
