A Mumbai-to-Varanasi flight faced a bomb threat mid-air, made an emergency landing, and triggered heightened security at five major Indian airports.

Pune | November 13, 2025: A scheduled flight from Mumbai to Varanasi operating under Air India Express received a bomb threat mid-air when a note stating “Bomb. Goodbye” was discovered in the lavatory. The aircraft, carrying more than 170 passengers, was diverted to and landed safely at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.

Upon landing, the aircraft was moved to an isolation bay. Passengers were asked to leave their carry-on baggage on the tarmac so security teams and sniffer dogs could conduct thorough inspections. When the search concluded with no explosives found, authorities treated it as a hoax.

In response to the incident, five major Indian airports—among them Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram—were placed on high alert after similar threat emails surfaced. The coordinated security response followed closely after a recent blast near Delhi’s Red Fort and reflects heightened vigilance across the aviation network.

The airline confirmed that the government-appointed Bomb Threat Assessment Committee was immediately notified, and standard security protocols were activated without delay. Flight operations remain suspended for the aircraft until all checks are cleared.
