Pune police make major arms recovery in Mohammadwadi, arrest three habitual offenders and seize four country-made pistols and five live cartridges worth ₹2.42 lakh.

Pune | November17 ,2025: In a significant crackdown on illegal firearms, Pune’s law-enforcement authorities have arrested three habitual offenders and recovered four country-made pistols along with five live cartridges in the Mohammadwadi area. The operation, which followed a tip-off and routine patrol by the local police station, is being hailed as a timely intervention likely to prevent a serious crime.

According to police sources, the incident unfolded on Sunday during a patrol managed by the Kalam Padal Police Station (Kale Padal) team. Constables Shahid Shaikh and Dawood Sayyed, while on duty, received credible intelligence that one of the city’s known criminals, 21-year-old Asif Sabirkha Teli from Sayyadnagar (Hadapsar), along with associates, was loitering on a mud road between Heaven Park and Laxmi Park near Palkhi Road and was suspected of carrying firearms. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, PSI Vinayak Gurav alerted Senior Police Inspector Mansing Patil, and a team was dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, officers intercepted three individuals behaving suspiciously. The men were identified as Asif Sabirkha Teli (21, resident of Sayyadnagar, Hadapsar), Yash Subhash Madane (20, resident of Bhimratnanagar, Baramati) and Prathamesh Sandeep Londhe (24, resident of Vadgaon Nimbalkar, Nira Road, Baramati). A search conducted in the presence of panch witnesses led to the discovery and seizure of four country-made pistols and five live cartridges, with an estimated street value of about ₹2.42 lakh. A case has now been registered under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act and the Mumbai Police Act at Kale Padal Police Station. All three accused have been arrested and are currently in police custody. The action was carried out under the supervision of DCP Zone 5 Rajkumar Shinde, ACP Wanwadi Division Dhanykumar Godse, and Senior PI Mansing Patil. Supporting officers included API Amit Shete, PSI Vinayak Gurav, and a team of constables and personnel.

Police officials say that the recovery is significant because such unlicensed weapons have the potential to be used in major crimes or turf-wars. The presence of multiple country-made pistols and live cartridges with young offenders highlights the continuing challenge the city’s crime-branches face in stemming the flow of illegal arms. Investigators are now probing the origin of the weapons, the possible buyers or end-users, and whether the arrested persons were part of a larger smuggling or distribution network operating across the Pune metropolitan area.

For local communities in and around Mohammadwadi and Hadapsar—areas which are rapidly urbanising and seeing changing demographics—this kind of police action provides some reassurance. Residents have increasingly complained about the visible presence of young men with guns, frequent threats and a sense of lawlessness in certain pockets. The recovery of four pistols and live rounds marks a tactical win in the policing of suburban zones. However, police officials caution that arrests alone are not enough. They emphasise the need for sustained intelligence-led operations, tracking of arms-routes (especially from neighbouring states), and better coordination between divisions to dismantle the supply chain.

From a policy perspective, this incident reiterates the need for stronger checks on country-made weapons—often cheaper, easier to acquire and harder to trace. It also underscores the importance of community-police partnership: reliable tip-offs from constables and informers played a key role in this seizure. Senior officers have flagged that such weapons often surface in crimes of extortion, gang rivalry, contract-killings and even politically-influenced turf wars. Therefore, the police will be keeping a close watch on the movement of known offenders and any attempt to replenish the arms pool.
