PCMC turns scrap materials into murals, sculptures and selfie-spots across Pimpri-Chinchwad to boost cleanliness and community pride.

Pune | November 24, 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad is witnessing a unique urban makeover as the municipal corporation has launched an ambitious “Waste to Wonder” initiative, turning discarded materials into vibrant public art. What were once garbage-dumping corners, littered patches, and neglected open spaces are now being redesigned into creative, colourful installations — all made from scrap.

Under this city-wide beautification drive, old tyres, metal pipes, broken household items, plastic bottles, wooden waste, and unused industrial scrap are being transformed into murals, sculptures, themed structures, and selfie spots. The goal is twofold: to enhance the visual appeal of public spaces and to send a strong message about sustainability, recycling, and civic cleanliness.

Several hotspots across the city — including Indiranagar, Nana-Nani Park, Morwadi, MHADA Colony, Ajinthanagar, Shivneri Society, Kavale Vakhar and stretches along MIDC Road — have already undergone visible transformation. Sanitation teams and local health officers have been directly involved in planning and creating installations, demonstrating how municipal departments can combine creativity with cleanliness efforts.

Among the standout artworks are large dinosaur sculptures made entirely of scrap metal, and an innovative “Car Evolution” display showcasing the transformation of passenger vehicles from the 1880s to the present day — all crafted using discarded automotive parts. These installations have quickly become photo-friendly spots for residents and visitors.

The initiative also focuses on converting chronic dumping areas into attractive selfie points. In Chinchwad, brooms, bamboo sticks, and other waste materials were reassembled into an artistic backdrop, replacing once-foul surroundings with visually appealing setups that discourage littering. Residents say these efforts have significantly improved the cleanliness and safety of public spaces.

One of the most ambitious expansions of this project is the development of a “Waste to Wonder World” theme park inside Rajmata Jijau Garden. This park will feature mini replicas of global monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Giza, Burj Khalifa, and more — all constructed from recycled materials. The aim is to create a cultural attraction that educates people about recycling while boosting civic pride.

The municipal corporation views the initiative as a powerful extension of its Swachh Bharat Mission objectives. By turning trash into artwork and engaging sanitation staff in creative efforts, the city is promoting environmental awareness and encouraging citizens to participate in maintaining public hygiene. Early impacts are promising: areas that previously attracted garbage dumping have now become clean, lively public hangouts.

Local residents note that such artistic transformations not only beautify the city but also inspire behavioural change. When a space looks cared for, people are less likely to litter. The corporation believes this approach — combining art, community involvement, and waste management — could serve as a model for other growing urban centres.
