Following regulator pressure, 26 leading e-commerce platforms declare they have removed manipulative UI tactics like drip pricing, bait-and-switch, and hidden ads.

Pune | November 24, 2025: After strong regulatory pressure, 26 major e-commerce platforms have officially declared that they have removed manipulative user-interface tactics, commonly known as “dark patterns.” These platforms conducted internal or third-party audits to comply with the government’s tightened rules. Authorities had given companies three months to identify and eliminate deceptive design features such as false urgency,

hidden charges, bait-and-switch tactics, and disguised advertisements. Several top online marketplaces across retail, travel, food delivery, and fashion have completed the audit process and confirmed that their apps and websites are now free from these practices. Officials have welcomed this step, calling it a major move toward fair digital commerce and improved consumer protection. A joint working group has also been formed to monitor ongoing implementation and ensure that online platforms continue to follow ethical design standards. However, experts warn that since a large percentage of digital platforms were previously found using at least one dark pattern, consistent oversight and periodic checks will be essential to ensure long-term compliance.
