Maharashtra to inaugurate Marathi Bhavan in Feb 2027 and launch a global Marathi language center in London, promoting language, culture, and education internationally.
London | March 12, 2026: In a landmark initiative to promote Marathi language and culture globally, the Maharashtra government announced that a Marathi Language Global Center will be established in London, complementing the upcoming Marathi Bhavan, scheduled for inauguration in February 2027. The announcement was made by Uday Samant, Maharashtra’s Minister for Education, Cultural Affairs, and Marathi Language.

This strategic initiative aims to create a global platform for Marathi education, literature, and cultural exchange, catering not only to the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom but also to international students, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts interested in Maharashtra’s heritage.
Marathi, spoken by over 83 million people worldwide, has historically been concentrated in Maharashtra and surrounding regions. However, with increasing migration and a growing Marathi-speaking diaspora in Europe, the government identified the need for a global hub that preserves and promotes language, literature, and cultural values internationally.
The Marathi Bhavan, set to be inaugurated in February 2027 in Maharashtra, will act as the central hub for coordinating language programs, research, and cultural initiatives. Parallelly, the London-based Marathi Language Global Center will serve as an international extension, offering language courses, workshops, seminars, and exhibitions to strengthen Marathi presence abroad.

“This is a historic step towards globalizing Marathi language and culture,” said Minister Uday Samant during the announcement. “The London center will not only offer education in Marathi but also create opportunities for cultural exchange, literary events, and professional networking for the diaspora.”
The initiative has been in the planning stage for over two years. According to government officials, Maharashtra’s Department of Education and the Marathi Language Development Board have collaborated with cultural organizations in the UK to identify suitable infrastructure, staffing, and curriculum design for the global center.
By February 2027, the Marathi Bhavan in Maharashtra will open its doors, housing administrative offices, research facilities, and interactive learning spaces. Subsequently, the London center is expected to launch by mid-2027, focusing on:
- Language Training: Courses for beginners to advanced learners.
- Cultural Exchange: Exhibitions, art shows, and literary festivals.
- Research & Scholarships: Support for international students and scholars in Marathi studies.

Linguists and cultural experts have praised the initiative. Dr. Anjali Deshpande, professor of Indian languages at the University of London, stated, “This is an unprecedented effort to preserve Marathi outside India. Such global centers strengthen linguistic identity and offer a platform for intercultural dialogue.”
Similarly, Mr. Ravindra Jadhav, President of the Marathi Association UK, highlighted the diaspora’s enthusiasm: “We have long awaited institutional support to promote Marathi abroad. This initiative will empower the younger generation to connect with their roots.”
The launch of the London center is expected to:
- Promote global recognition of Marathi language and literature.
- Strengthen academic research and literary collaborations internationally.
- Enhance cultural diplomacy between India and the UK.
- Provide career opportunities in translation, education, and cultural programming.
This initiative aligns with Maharashtra’s larger strategy to digitally and globally promote Marathi language while engaging with international communities.
The Marathi Language Global Center in London, along with the Marathi Bhavan in Maharashtra, marks a historic step in taking Marathi language and culture to a global stage. With robust planning, expert collaboration, and community involvement, Maharashtra is poised to make Marathi a truly international language while preserving its cultural legacy.
