Maharashtra plans a new IT park in Purandar near the proposed Pune airport to reduce pressure on Hinjawadi and boost jobs and infrastructure.

Pune | 16 March, 2026: The Maharashtra government is planning to develop a new Information Technology park in Purandar to address the increasing pressure on the existing IT hub at Hinjewadi. The proposal aims to create an alternative technology hub that can support the rapid expansion of the IT sector in Pune, which has emerged as one of India’s leading technology and startup centres.

The proposal was discussed in the state legislature where Uday Samant, Industries Minister of Maharashtra, said the government is actively exploring the development of the IT park to ease congestion and infrastructure stress in Hinjawadi. Over the past decade, the technology hub has witnessed massive growth with hundreds of companies operating from the region. However, the rapid expansion has also resulted in major traffic congestion, longer commute times for employees, and increasing pressure on existing civic infrastructure.

Officials indicated that around 572 hectares of land has been identified for the proposed project. Government-owned land parcels in villages such as Dive, Kodit, and Chambali in the Purandar region are being considered for the development. Once the process of transferring land from the revenue department to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation is completed and necessary approvals are obtained, planning and infrastructure development for the IT park will begin.

At present, Hinjawadi houses the well-known Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, one of India’s largest IT clusters. The technology park hosts numerous multinational corporations, startups, and technology companies, providing employment to thousands of professionals. However, due to the concentration of offices in a single region, employees frequently face long travel times and severe traffic congestion during peak hours.

The government believes that developing a second large IT hub in Purandar could help distribute industrial growth across the Pune metropolitan region. By creating another technology corridor, authorities hope to reduce dependency on Hinjawadi while simultaneously encouraging new investments and business expansion in emerging areas around the city.

Another factor supporting the proposed project is the planned Purandar International Airport, which is expected to improve regional connectivity once completed. The proximity of the proposed IT park to the airport could make the location attractive for multinational technology companies that require efficient domestic and international connectivity for business travel and logistics.

Economic planners believe the new IT park could generate large-scale employment opportunities in the region once it becomes operational. Early projections suggest the project could potentially create up to one lakh jobs directly and indirectly through IT services, support industries, and associated infrastructure development.

Industry representatives have welcomed the concept but have also urged the government to ensure better infrastructure planning from the beginning. Experts have pointed out that challenges currently faced in Hinjawadi, such as road congestion and limited public transport options, should be avoided in the new project. Proper urban planning, improved road networks, and strong public transport connectivity will be crucial to ensure the long-term success of the proposed IT hub.

Officials say the next steps will involve completing the land transfer process, obtaining cabinet approval, and preparing a detailed master plan for the IT park. Once these formalities are completed, infrastructure development including roads, utilities, and connectivity systems will be planned to support future IT investments.
