Neelam Gorhe raises concerns over declining tourism in Pune, urges DyCM Sunetra Pawar to improve facilities at heritage sites.
Pune | 17 March, 2026: A growing concern over declining tourism in Pune has come to the forefront after Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe urged Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar to intervene and address poor infrastructure at key heritage sites across the district. In a formal communication, Gorhe highlighted that several historically significant locations are witnessing a steady drop in tourist footfall due to lack of basic amenities and poor coordination between authorities.

Among the major concerns raised was the declining popularity of iconic sites like Shaniwar Wada, which once attracted over 14 lakh visitors annually but has seen reduced numbers in recent years. The suspension of its popular light-and-sound show due to technical and funding issues has further impacted tourist interest. Similarly, destinations like Lohagad Fort have reportedly recorded nearly a 40 percent drop in visitors, indicating a broader trend affecting Pune’s heritage tourism sector.
The issue is not limited to footfall alone. Revenue generated from tourism at sites such as Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, and Aga Khan Palace has also declined, reflecting the wider economic impact. According to Gorhe, delays in approvals from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and lack of coordination with local administration have slowed down development and maintenance work.
One of the most pressing concerns flagged is the absence of basic tourist facilities such as clean drinking water, proper roads, sanitation infrastructure, and modern toilets at many sites. This lack of essential amenities not only discourages visitors but also affects Pune’s reputation as a cultural and historical destination. The situation is particularly worrying given the district’s rich Maratha and ancient heritage, which has the potential to attract both domestic and international tourists.
Experts and local stakeholders believe that without timely intervention, Pune risks losing its position as a key tourism hub in Maharashtra. Gorhe has therefore called on the state government to take immediate steps to improve infrastructure, streamline permissions, and revive tourism-focused initiatives. She also emphasized that strengthening the tourism sector could generate local employment and boost the regional economy.
