The state government has constituted a task force to act against unauthorised nursing homes, directing civic bodies including BMC to gather detailed information and strengthen regulatory action.

Mumbai | March 17, 2026: In a decisive move to curb the operation of illegal healthcare facilities, the Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to take action against unauthorized nursing homes across the state.

As part of the directive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been instructed to collect comprehensive data on nursing homes operating within its jurisdiction. The information will include registration status, compliance with medical regulations and infrastructure standards.

Officials said the initiative aims to identify unregistered and non-compliant facilities that pose risks to patient safety. Concerns have been raised over several nursing homes functioning without proper licences, qualified staff or adherence to mandatory healthcare norms.

The newly formed task force will coordinate with local authorities and health departments to carry out inspections and initiate strict action against violators. Authorities indicated that facilities found operating illegally could face penalties, closure or legal proceedings.

The move comes amid increasing scrutiny of private healthcare establishments, with experts stressing the importance of regulatory oversight to ensure quality treatment and patient safety. Unauthorised nursing homes often lack basic medical infrastructure and fail to meet safety standards, putting patients at risk.

By involving civic bodies like the BMC in data collection, the government aims to create a centralised database that will help in monitoring and regulating healthcare institutions more effectively. Officials believe this will also improve transparency and accountability in the healthcare sector.

The task force is expected to begin its work soon, with inspections likely to be carried out in phases across urban and semi-urban areas. Authorities have also hinted at similar directions being issued to other municipal corporations in Maharashtra.

Healthcare experts have welcomed the decision, stating that stricter enforcement is essential to eliminate unsafe medical practices and protect patients from unregulated facilities.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all healthcare providers operate within the legal framework, maintaining required standards of care and patient safety.
