April 17, 2026 | Pune: Pune is once again in shock after a third fatal tanker accident within just 10 days, this time in the Hadapsar area, triggering anger and fear among residents. The repeated incidents have raised serious questions about road safety, tanker operations, and enforcement by authorities.

According to reports, the latest accident involved a speeding water tanker that allegedly hit a pedestrian, resulting in a fatality. This marks the third such incident in a short span, intensifying concerns over reckless driving and lack of regulation in tanker operations across Pune’s rapidly growing suburbs.

The tragedy has led to strong reactions from local residents, who say that tanker movement in areas like Hadapsar, Mohammadwadi, and Undri has become increasingly dangerous. Many housing societies in these regions rely heavily on private water tankers due to inadequate municipal supply, resulting in a surge of heavy vehicles on narrow internal roads.

Recent incidents highlight a disturbing pattern. Just days ago, two separate fatal tanker accidents claimed young lives, including a 19-year-old and a 22-year-old woman, sparking protests and public outrage. These back-to-back tragedies had already put authorities under pressure, and the latest incident has only intensified demands for stricter action.

Residents have alleged that many tanker drivers operate without proper licences, safety training, or adherence to traffic rules. Cases of drunk driving, overspeeding, and rash behaviour have also been reported, making daily commuting risky for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.

Following earlier accidents, Pune Traffic Police had launched a crackdown, inspecting hundreds of tankers and taking action against multiple violators. However, locals argue that enforcement is still inconsistent and insufficient to prevent such tragedies.

The situation has now escalated into public anger. Residents of Hadapsar and surrounding areas have demanded immediate measures such as:

• Strict speed limits and designated tanker routes
• Mandatory driver verification and alcohol testing
• Installation of GPS and cameras in tanker vehicles
• Banning tanker movement during peak hours

Civic activists have also pointed out that the root cause of the issue lies in Pune’s dependency on private water tankers, especially in newly developed areas where pipeline infrastructure is still incomplete. Without a reliable municipal water supply, tanker traffic continues to increase, raising both safety and environmental concerns.

Urban experts warn that unless systemic changes are made-both in water supply management and traffic enforcement—such incidents may continue. The combination of high demand, poor regulation, and rapid urban expansion has created a dangerous situation on city roads.
