A specialized environmental sanitation drive at the historic Sangam Mahuli pilgrimage site resulted in the extraction of 3.5 tons of garbage to safeguard regional public health.
June 1, 2026 | Satara: Commemorating the 301st birth anniversary of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar and the upcoming World Environment Day, a massive cleanliness coalition successfully cleared 3,500 kilograms of accumulated waste from the holy banks of the Krishna and Venna rivers. Organized on Sunday morning, the pre-monsoon ecological intervention aimed to sanitize the heavily visited riverfront ghats before seasonal rains wash land-based plastic pollutants and ritual waste directly into the critical regional water systems.
Known historically as ‘Dakshin Kashi’, the Sangam Mahuli confluence attracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims daily for religious rituals, leading to severe solid waste accumulation along the riverbeds. The ecological health of this specific zone remains vital for the broader district, as a major water pumping station situated directly beneath the local bridge serves as the primary source of domestic drinking water for the eastern sectors of Satara city. Environmental groups designed the campaign to mitigate rising water pollution risks and foster proactive civic awareness regarding shared natural resources.

The extensive cleanup operations brought together a diverse network of non-governmental organizations, local governance bodies, and student volunteers. Key participants included coordinators from the Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi, the Harit Front Warriors, the Harit Satara squad, and the Sagar Mitra Abhiyan. Additionally, youth contingents from the Vedant Academy, NCC cadets from the Yashoda Education Society’s Sadhana English School, and administrative representatives, including the Deputy Sarpanch of Sangam Mahuli and senior Satara Municipal Council health officials, worked jointly to clear the debris.
As volunteers meticulously segregated and extracted the waste from the river basin, participating environmental scientists and citizens urged local authorities to transition toward long-term structural solutions. The coalition submitted a collective appeal demanding the immediate installation of advanced wastewater treatment facilities to filter urban sewage before it enters the river stream. Emphasizing the critical link between river preservation and municipal health, organizers concluded that sustained community monitoring is essential to ensure a clean, contamination-free water supply for the city.
