In a targeted operation aimed at curbing hazardous illegal activities, local law enforcement officials in Chakan have successfully busted a clandestine gas refilling racket. Acting on a tip-off regarding the dangerous practice of transferring LPG from large commercial cylinders to smaller, domestic-use canisters, police raided a designated storage site on the outskirts of the town.
During the operation, officials seized a total of 81 LPG cylinders of varying sizes, along with sophisticated pumping machinery and transfer pipes used to conduct the illegal refills. The process, which is highly volatile and poses a severe risk of fire or explosion, had been operating without any safety licenses or fire department clearance. One suspect has been taken into custody and is currently facing charges for endangering public safety and violating the Essential Commodities Act.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the operation had been supplying these refilled cylinders to local eateries and residential households at prices significantly lower than the standard market rate. However, these savings came at a massive risk to the public, as the unregulated refilling process often results in structural defects in the cylinders, making them prone to leaks and catastrophic failure.

“The accused was running this business in a densely populated area, showing complete disregard for human life and safety protocols,” a police official involved in the raid stated. The police are now working to trace the source of the commercial cylinders and identify other potential participants in the distribution network.
Authorities have issued a strong warning to residents, urging them to source LPG only from authorized distributors. Officials emphasized that unauthorized refilling not only constitutes a serious criminal offense but also transforms domestic kitchens into potential hazard zones. The investigation remains ongoing as police look to determine the full scale of the operation’s reach across the Chakan industrial belt.
