Meta has reaffirmed its commitment to combating child sexual exploitation, describing such crimes as “horrific” and stating that it does not want any such content on its platforms. The statement comes days after the Indian government issued a notice to the social media giant over reports alleging that advertisements on Instagram promoted or facilitated access to child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Responding to the concerns, Meta said it has a zero-tolerance policy toward child exploitation and has invested heavily in technology, specialised safety teams, and proactive detection systems to identify and remove harmful content before it reaches users. The company maintained that content involving child sexual exploitation has no place on its platforms and pledged continued cooperation with authorities to strengthen online safety.
According to the company, it has removed approximately four million accounts and 36 million posts linked to child exploitation in recent enforcement efforts. Meta said it employs artificial intelligence, image-matching technologies, behavioural analysis, and user reporting mechanisms to detect abusive material, while also sharing relevant information with law enforcement agencies and global child protection organisations where appropriate.
The Centre’s action followed concerns raised over advertisements allegedly carrying child sexual exploitative and abuse material on Instagram. The government directed Meta to immediately disable such advertisements and sought a detailed explanation regarding the incident, underscoring India’s strict approach towards protecting children in the digital space.
Meta rejected suggestions that it had intentionally promoted or targeted such advertisements, stating that the reported content violated its policies and should never have appeared on its platforms. The company said it continues to review and strengthen its content moderation systems to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

The episode has renewed global attention on the responsibility of technology companies to strengthen moderation systems, improve advertising reviews, and deploy advanced safeguards against the spread of illegal and exploitative content. Experts believe social media platforms will face increasing regulatory expectations to ensure faster detection, removal, and reporting of harmful material, particularly content involving children.
