The School Bus Owners Association has announced a 15% fare hike across Maharashtra starting this month, citing rising operational costs. The move puts additional financial pressure on already burdened parents.

Pune|June 4, 2026: A new academic year has brought significant financial anxiety for parents across Maharashtra as the School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) officially announced a 15% increase in school bus fares. This decision, effective from the current month, is set to impact millions of families in major cities, including Pune, Mumbai, Thane, and Nagpur. The association claims the hike is an unavoidable measure necessitated by the sustained inflation of operational expenses and the lack of state government intervention regarding their financial demands.

SBOA President Anil Garg stated that despite multiple representations submitted to the state government, the Transport Ministry, and various enforcement agencies, no relief has been provided to the transport sector. The escalating costs of diesel and fuel, coupled with rising salaries for drivers and support staff, have made it impossible for operators to maintain current fare structures. Furthermore, the association highlighted that the mounting financial burden of vehicle maintenance, rising insurance premiums, mandatory fitness certificate fees, and increased penalties from e-challans have collectively pushed operators to the brink of financial viability.

For parents, this fare hike represents a double blow, coming immediately after many schools raised their tuition fees and the costs of essential educational materials like books, notebooks, and uniforms surged. The cumulative impact on household budgets is severe, particularly for families with two or more children utilizing school bus services. Many parents have expressed deep frustration, noting that the school bus is not merely a convenience but a necessity for student transport, given the logistical challenges of daily commuting.

As the academic session gains momentum, households are now forced to re-evaluate their monthly expenses to accommodate the additional transport costs. With no immediate signs of government subsidies or a rollback of the fare increase, families are bracing for a challenging year characterized by squeezed budgets and rising educational overheads, leaving many to demand urgent administrative oversight to balance the interests of transport operators and the struggling middle-class public.
