Lok Sabha MP and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) national working president Supriya Sule has warned that she will launch an indefinite protest outside the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters starting July 7 if the civic body continues to fail in shutting down ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants operating in residential pockets of Undri. Sule accused the PMC of repeatedly offering assurances without taking concrete action, leaving residents to deal with worsening pollution, damaged roads, and rising safety risks.
The warning comes nearly three months after Sule’s April visit to Undri, where residents had flagged the growing presence of RMC plants and their impact on health and infrastructure. During that visit, she had engaged with PMC officials on-site and assured residents that the matter would be resolved by May 1, based on commitments from civic officers. With no follow-up action taken since, Sule has now decided to escalate the agitation.
In a post on social media platform X, Sule said the plants located near residential areas have driven up pollution levels, triggering health issues among locals. She further alleged that heavy vehicles ferrying material to these plants have damaged roads extensively and are often driven recklessly, posing a continuous threat to commuters in the area.
She pointed out that the area has witnessed multiple accidents, some of which have proven fatal, and expressed disappointment that despite her sustained efforts and repeated complaints from residents, the RMC plants remain operational. Sule reiterated that if the plants are not shut by July 7, she will stage a sit-in protest along with affected residents outside the PMC headquarters from 10:30 am that day.
Residents of Undri have long demanded stricter civic action, citing dust pollution, heavy vehicular movement, and the presence of industrial units within residential zones as factors steadily degrading their living conditions.
