US-Iran Peace Treaty Imminent Amid Caution from Trump and Unresolved Nuclear Disputes

New Delhi | May 26, 2026 : A landmark peace treaty aimed at permanently ending the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran is highly likely to be finalized today, according to signals from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio indicated that a comprehensive proposal is ready to reopen vital maritime routes and strategic straits for Iranian commerce. While a temporary ceasefire has been successfully observed by both nations since April 8, the US has strictly maintained its aggressive economic blockade of major Iranian ports.

Despite the imminent diplomatic breakthrough, US President Donald Trump has adopted a remarkably cautious stance. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he instructed American representatives not to rush the proceedings, asserting that time remains on the side of the United States. The President emphasized that the economic blockade against Iran will continue to be enforced with full strength until the final documents are formally signed. According to Iranian state media, the contentious issue of Iran’s frozen financial assets also remains unresolved.

The geopolitical stakes remain incredibly high as international leaders weigh in. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation with Trump, demanding that the final treaty must comprehensively eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat. Concurrently, regional powers including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are actively mediating the peace process. Meanwhile, in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that while consensus has been reached on a 14-point regional ceasefire framework, an immediate signing is not guaranteed. Baghaei clarified that this framework primarily addresses regional stability, including Lebanon, while Iran’s controversial nuclear program has been excluded for separate, subsequent negotiations.
