Big Relief for Vehicle Owners: UPI Toll Payments to Get Cheaper from November 15
Starting November 15, commuters without FASTag will no longer pay double the toll — UPI transactions will be charged only 25% extra
Pune, October 07, 2025: In a major relief for highway commuters, the government has announced that from November 15, 2025, vehicle owners who pay tolls via UPI will be charged just 1.25 times the FASTag rate — a significant drop from the existing rule that requires non-FASTag users to pay double the toll fee.
The change comes as part of the Third Amendment to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2025, aimed at promoting digital payments while reducing the financial burden on those who occasionally use highways or face technical issues with their FASTag.
For instance, if the FASTag toll rate is ₹100, those paying by UPI will now pay ₹125, instead of ₹200 as earlier. The move is expected to benefit lakhs of drivers and reduce congestion at toll plazas across the country.
Under the revised system:
- FASTag users will continue to pay the standard toll rate.
- UPI and other digital payments will attract only 25% additional charges.
- Cash payments will still require drivers to pay double the toll fee, as before.
Officials explained that the decision is part of a broader effort to encourage seamless toll collection and discourage cash transactions without penalizing commuters excessively. The government has also urged vehicle owners to verify that their FASTag accounts remain active and linked to updated bank details.
The upcoming reform will apply across all National Highway toll plazas, covering major routes in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and other states. The simplified digital payment option via UPI is expected to make the toll experience faster, more transparent, and convenient for users.
Transport experts say this change strikes a balance between rewarding digital adoption and reducing dependence on cash, while ensuring fairness for occasional travelers who might not have FASTag access.
