51 Traffic Signals Stop Working in Pune Amid Prepaid Meter Work
Fifty-one traffic signals in Pune stopped working around 8 am on October 9 amid prepaid electricity meter work, raising concerns over traffic congestion.
PUNE: As many as 51 traffic signals across Pune stopped functioning at around 8 am on Friday, October 9, creating concerns over traffic congestion at busy junctions. Pune City Police attributed the disruption to an issue that occurred during the installation and updating of new prepaid electricity meters.
The outage affected multiple junctions within the Pune Police Commissionerate limits. However, the exact locations of all affected signals and a confirmed timeline for restoring the entire system were not immediately available.
Police Seek Explanation from PMC
After noticing the disruption, Pune traffic police contacted the Electrical Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to determine the cause.
A junior engineer identified as Murmure reportedly informed the police that prepaid electricity meter installation and related updating work was underway. Some traffic signals had stopped functioning during this process, and efforts were initiated to restore them.
Commuters Face Potential Traffic Disruptions
Traffic signals are essential for regulating vehicle movement at busy intersections. Their sudden failure can create confusion among motorists, increase the risk of congestion and place additional pressure on traffic personnel, particularly during peak commuting hours.
With signals reportedly affected in different parts of Pune, commuters faced the possibility of delays while travelling through junctions without functioning lights.
The incident has raised concerns about coordination between electricity-related work and essential traffic infrastructure. Ensuring uninterrupted operation of traffic signals is important to maintain road safety and manage traffic flow across the city.
Officials were working to restore the affected signals, but a confirmed timeline for the complete restoration was not available in the initial report.
