PMC promises tap water supply in Undri and Mohammadwadi by May 15 despite pipeline hurdles, offering relief to residents dependent on tankers.

Pune, April 23, 2026: After years of struggle and repeated protests, residents of Undri and Mohammadwadi may finally see relief as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has assured that regular tap water supply will begin by May 15, even as some pipeline challenges persist.

Officials stated that work on the water infrastructure is being carried out on a “war footing,” with most of the pipeline network already completed. Once the remaining hurdles are resolved, water will be routed to three overhead tanks installed near Dorabjee Mall and then distributed across residential areas through a connected pipeline system.

The move is expected to benefit nearly 1.5 lakh residents who currently rely heavily on private water tankers for daily needs. For years, these localities have faced severe water shortages due to the absence of a functional municipal pipeline network, forcing housing societies to spend heavily on tanker supply.

However, the project has not been without delays. A key obstacle remains a small but critical stretch of pipeline work along the Katraj–Kondhwa Road, where technical issues such as terrain and existing structures have slowed progress. Officials have indicated that efforts are underway to resolve these bottlenecks before the monsoon season.

In the interim, PMC is preparing for a trial run of the water distribution system starting mid-May, after which full-scale supply will gradually begin. While continuous 24×7 water supply may not be immediate, authorities say the initial rollout will significantly reduce dependence on tankers and stabilise availability.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of a worsening water crisis in south Pune, where tanker strikes and rising costs have further exposed the lack of civic infrastructure. Residents have repeatedly staged protests demanding pipeline connectivity, highlighting the urgency of the issue.

If the May 15 deadline is met, it will mark a major breakthrough for Undri and Mohammadwadi after years of waiting. While challenges remain, the project offers hope for a more reliable and affordable water supply for thousands of Pune residents.
