Pune Braces for 42°C Heat: IMD Warns of Scorching Days Despite Thunderstorm Chances

Pune
Pune weather update: IMD forecasts temperatures up to 42°C with possible thunderstorms. Heatwave-like conditions expected in coming days.
Pune | April 25, 2026:The city is gearing up for an intense spell of summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that temperatures could soar up to 41–42°C over the next few days, even as isolated thunderstorms and light rain are expected to offer only brief relief.
According to IMD forecasts, several parts of Pune-including Lohegaon and Koregaon Park-are likely to experience the highest temperatures, with the mercury touching 41°C over the weekend and rising further to around 42°C in the coming days. The rising heat is being attributed to an anticyclonic circulation over the region, which is leading to clear skies and increased solar heating, pushing daytime temperatures significantly above normal.

Despite the scorching conditions, weather experts have predicted a “very likely” chance of thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall, particularly during the afternoon or evening hours. However, these showers are expected to be short-lived and may not significantly reduce daytime temperatures, resulting in continued discomfort for residents.
Morning temperatures across the city have also remained on the higher side, with several localities recording above-normal minimum temperatures. Areas such as Hadapsar, Magarpatta, and Chinchwad have seen warmer starts to the day, indicating an overall rise in both day and night temperatures. This trend is contributing to increased heat stress, especially among vulnerable groups.
The IMD has indicated that while parts of Madhya Maharashtra may see a temporary pause in weather alerts, the broader region continues to experience heatwave-like conditions. In fact, several districts across Maharashtra have already recorded temperatures above 40°C, with forecasts suggesting that the heat could persist for the next few days.
Adding to the discomfort is rising humidity, which has been making the heat feel more intense. Recent observations show humidity levels increasing significantly, reducing the body’s ability to cool down effectively through sweat evaporation. This has resulted in a higher “real feel” temperature across Pune.
Health experts are advising citizens to take precautions, including avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours (11 am to 4 pm), staying hydrated, and wearing light, breathable clothing. Special caution has been recommended for children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers who are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
Urban planners and environmental experts also point out that rapid urbanisation, reduced green cover, and increasing concrete surfaces are contributing to Pune’s rising temperatures. The “urban heat island” effect is becoming more evident, especially in densely built areas.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to remain alert for sudden weather changes, including gusty winds and lightning during thunderstorms. Commuters and daily wage workers, in particular, have been advised to plan their schedules carefully to avoid both extreme heat and unexpected weather activity.
