Pune Residents Flag Severe Traffic Chaos Amid Ganga Dham-Aai Mata Road Works, Demand Immediate Action

April 16, 2026 | Pune: Traffic congestion in Pune’s Kondhwa–Gangadham belt has once again come under the spotlight, as residents have raised strong concerns over worsening jams due to ongoing road work on the Ganga Dham–Aai Mata Mandir stretch. With excavation and infrastructure upgrades underway, daily commuting in the area has become increasingly difficult, prompting citizens to demand urgent intervention from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic police.

The stretch, which connects key areas like Bibwewadi, Kondhwa and Market Yard, is already known for heavy traffic flow. Now, with road work in progress, the situation has intensified, leading to long queues, delays and frustration among commuters. Residents say that despite prior knowledge of the project, proper traffic management measures have not been implemented on the ground.

According to earlier traffic advisories, parts of the road had even been temporarily closed for excavation work, forcing vehicles to divert through alternative routes like Bibwewadi and Lulla Nagar. However, locals claim that these diversions are either poorly managed or inadequately communicated, resulting in bottlenecks across connecting roads.

What makes the situation more concerning is that this stretch has a history of traffic and safety issues. The steep slope near Aai Mata Mandir has been identified as a major risk factor, with multiple accidents reported in the past. Even before the current work began, authorities had initiated slope correction and imposed restrictions like heavy vehicle bans to improve safety.

Despite these measures, residents argue that the lack of on-ground traffic control during construction is making matters worse. Peak-hour congestion has become a daily challenge, with commuters often spending 15–20 minutes just to cross short junctions. In addition, issues like roadside parking, encroachments, and poor road conditions have further compounded the problem.

Local residents and housing societies are now urging authorities to deploy dedicated traffic personnel, install proper signage, and ensure real-time coordination during ongoing work. Many have also suggested implementing temporary one-way systems or signal adjustments to ease pressure on the busiest junctions.

Urban experts believe that such situations highlight a recurring problem in Pune—lack of coordinated planning between civic projects and traffic management. While infrastructure upgrades are necessary, the absence of parallel traffic planning often leads to chaos on the roads, affecting thousands of daily commuters.
