Pune | 11 March, 2026: Pune is experiencing a noticeable shift in weather as minimum temperatures rise and daytime highs cross 35°C in several parts of the city, according to the latest observations from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). After a brief dip in night-time readings earlier this season, residents are now witnessing warmer nights, a clear indication that summer is approaching rapidly across western Maharashtra. In areas such as Shivajinagar, Pashan, Lohegaon, and Chinchwad, night-time temperatures have climbed well above 20°C -with Lohegaon and Chinchwad recording highs of 25.6°C and 25.4°C respectively -marking one of the first times this year that the night mercury has stayed significantly warm.

Daytime conditions have also heated up, with several localities including Koregaon Park, Wadgaon Sheri, and Magarpatta regularly observing thermometers in the mid-30s. These readings have made afternoons particularly intense, as residents grapple with oppressive warmth that closely resembles early summer conditions rather than typical late March weather. The city’s climatic trend fits Pune’s tropical wet-and-dry climate pattern, where summers -officially from mid-March to mid-June -often usher in sustained high temperatures and reduced diurnal variation between day and night.

Meteorologists attribute the uptick in heat to seasonal wind patterns and rising humidity levels brought in by westerly winds from the Arabian Sea. According to S. D. Sanap, a scientist at the IMD’s Pune observatory, increased moisture in the atmosphere has contributed to elevated night-time temperatures and helped trap heat close to the surface, reducing the usual cooling that occurs after sunset. These conditions are expected to persist over the next few days, with maximum temperatures likely to rise by another 1–2°C across most parts of Maharashtra, except Vidarbha, before stabilizing or gradually dipping later this week. Pune and its surrounding regions are forecast to experience partly cloudy skies during this period.

The broader state picture reflects intensifying heat conditions, especially in central and eastern Maharashtra. Cities such as Akola, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Solapur, and Nagpur have consistently seen daytime temperatures approach or exceed 38°C, with Vidarbha locations crossing the 40°C threshold in recent days. This surge aligns with the typical progression toward the summer heat peak, although official IMD advisories have not declared a formal “heatwave” at this stage.

Locals have reacted to the warmer nights and hotter days with mixed sentiments. While summer festivities and outdoor activities are often anticipated with excitement, higher temperatures can strain public health and daily routines, especially for people working outdoors or without access to consistent cooling. Heat-related discomfort is compounded by rising humidity, which makes already high temperatures feel even more stifling and can increase the risk of heat exhaustion for vulnerable populations.

Despite the warming trends, Pune’s weather outlook suggests no immediate extreme weather events such as widespread thunderstorms or widespread rain in the next short term. Rather, weather experts expect these warm conditions to form a transitional phase as summer firmly sets in. Seasonal forecasts from reputable meteorological services also indicate that while day temperatures remain elevated, slight fluctuations may occur due to cloud cover and brief passes of moisture-laden air masses -but no substantial cooling is expected imminently.

In summary, warmer nights combined with daytime temperatures rising above 35°C signal an unmistakable shift toward the summer season in Pune. With higher humidity and sustained heat becoming regular features, residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit exposure during peak afternoon hours, and monitor weather updates regularly as the city progresses into the hotter months of the year.
