Maharashtra Weather Alert: Heatwave Warning with Unseasonal Rain Forecast, Yellow Alerts Issued
Maharashtra
Maharashtra faces heatwave conditions along with forecast of thunderstorms; IMD issues yellow alerts across multiple districts.
April 18, 2026 | Pune: Maharashtra is witnessing a sharp weather shift, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts across several districts for a mix of heatwave conditions and upcoming unseasonal rainfall. The alert for April 18 highlights a rare combination of extreme heat followed by sudden weather changes.
According to forecasts, parts of the state—especially Vidarbha and Madhya Maharashtra—are currently experiencing intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing 40–44°C in several regions. The IMD has warned that the heat could continue in isolated areas, posing health risks, particularly for children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers.
However, relief may not be straightforward. Weather models indicate that thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light to moderate rainfall are likely to begin across Maharashtra from April 19 onward. Districts including Pune, Nashik, Satara, Sangli, and parts of Marathwada are expected to witness sudden weather changes, including lightning and wind speeds of up to 30–50 km/h.
This dual weather pattern is due to changing atmospheric conditions. While heatwave-triggering dry air continues to dominate, incoming moisture and upper-level disturbances are expected to trigger cloud formation and rain activity across the state.

Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious. During the heatwave phase, people are urged to avoid stepping out between 12 pm and 4 pm, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing. At the same time, the possibility of thunderstorms means residents should also prepare for sudden rain, especially in the evening hours.
Experts say such fluctuations are becoming more frequent due to climate variability, where extreme heat is often followed by sudden pre-monsoon showers. While the rainfall may bring temporary relief from soaring temperatures, it can also lead to disruptions like power outages, traffic issues, and damage to crops.
Maharashtra is currently facing a contrasting weather pattern—scorching heat followed by expected thunderstorms. While rain may offer relief, the coming days demand caution as both heatwave and sudden weather changes pose risks to public health and daily life.
