Pune faces water shortage as PMC delays restoration after repair shutdown; low pressure and late supply hit multiple areas across city.
Pune, April 24, 2026: Thousands of residents across Pune woke up to dry taps as water supply restoration was delayed following a scheduled shutdown by the Pune Municipal Corporation for repair and maintenance work.
The civic body had earlier announced a 24-hour city-wide water cut on April 23 to carry out urgent electrical, pumping, and civil repairs at major water treatment plants and pumping stations. However, even after the shutdown period ended, water supply did not resume on time in several parts of the city, leaving residents struggling for basic needs.

Officials had already cautioned that supply on the following day could be delayed and come with low pressure. That warning turned into reality, with many localities reporting either no water or extremely weak flow well into the day.
Areas across central and suburban Pune were affected, forcing residents to rely on stored water or tanker services. The disruption once again exposed the city’s fragile water distribution system, especially during peak summer when demand is already high.
The shutdown was part of routine but essential infrastructure maintenance, covering multiple key facilities including treatment plants and pumping stations. While such maintenance is necessary to avoid long-term breakdowns, repeated delays in restoring supply have drawn criticism from citizens.
In recent weeks, Pune has already been facing mounting water-related challenges – from tanker dependency in growing suburbs to pipeline delays in areas like Undri and Mohammadwadi, affecting thousands of households. The latest disruption has only added to residents’ frustration.

Civic officials have urged citizens to use water judiciously and assured that normal supply will gradually stabilise. However, residents say the recurring pattern of shutdowns followed by delayed restoration highlights the need for better planning and communication.
While maintenance shutdowns are unavoidable, delays in restoring water supply continue to inconvenience Pune residents. As the city expands, improving infrastructure reliability and execution will be key to avoiding such disruptions in the future.
